 Liquid Glass Coating is all the rage these days and it’s not hard to see why when it’s being used for all kinds of applications, including coatings for equipment, medical implants, catheters, sutures, and bandages. It creates a clear glass-like coating that bacteria can’t grow on. Although made of pure silicon dioxide, also called silica, there are claims that it is safe to breathe. 

Since crystalline (dust) silica causes silicosis and harms the lungs can a liquid version of silicon dioxide be safer? Safe enough to swallow? 

Silicon is currently used in the majority of, if not all, semiconductor technology for its ability to ‘insulate’ electric current. Crystalline silica causes silicosis when inhaled over long periods of time. It can also cause bronchitis and lung cancer.

Silicosis happens by breathing the dust particulates of glass, which cut and scar the lungs, causing damage, which results in diminished lung capacity. So where does the silicon dioxide enter into this equation as a safe product to breathe when applied as a spray?  

Liquid glass is actually ‘sodium’ silicate. Sodium silicate is used in everything from automobile repair, adhesives, and food preservation, to aquaculture, water treatment, and passive fire protection. The search for “liquid silicon dioxide” resulted in finding colloidal silica. Colloidal silica is spherical silica in a liquid state, which essentially means ‘liquid glass’ crystals which are smooth and round instead of sha and pointed.

Is this why it is safe to breath? Because there are no sharp edges to damage lung tissue? But why would we think it is safe to fill our lungs with round glass any more than with jagged sharp glass particles? Do the lungs have the ability to process and get rid of the ‘spherical’ shapes through the blood stream?

    Colloidal silica is simply the liquid spherical shape of silicon dioxide while sodium silicate is silicon dioxide with an added salt element (Na). Both products are derived from the second most abundant element on Earth – sand. The production of liquid glass products may very well have a limitless and beneficial place in our world.  
But I would still suggest you not breathe it in.

SiO2 Nano liquid glass is actually ‘sodium’ silicate. Sodium silicate is the common name for a compound sodium metasilicate, Na2SiO3.

Also known in some circles as “water glass” the compound was defined in Von Wagner'sManual of Chemical Technology (1892 translation) as any of the soluble alkaline silicates, first observed by Van Helmont circa 1640 as a fluid substance made by melting sand with excess alkali.

SiO2 Liquid Glass is a coating of pure, safe, quartz glass or silicon dioxide (Si02). Silicon dioxide is the most abundant mineral on earth and the chief ingredient in glass. The glass that you find in windows is not pure glass.

Silicon dioxide is also known as silica (from the Latin silex) and is a chemical compound that is an oxide of silicon with the chemical formula SiO2. It has been known for its hardness since ancient times.

Silica is most commonly found in nature as sand or quartz. It is a primary raw material for many whiteware ceramics such as earthenware, stoneware, porcelain, as well as industrial Portland cement. In hydrated form, it is used in toothpaste as a hard abrasive to remove tooth plaque.

SiO2 is also found in many foods, water and beer. When applied to a surface in its Nano form, the layer is very thin and clear, and it is for this reason it has been named Liquid Glass. It doesn’t become “glass” until it’s allowed to dry.  Once dried the coatings are highly durable, flexible, super smooth, breathable and ‘Super Phobic’ coating. 

Being ‘Super Phobic’ means that it repels oil, water, and dry soiling.  Dry dirt will not stick to the treated surface and liquids such as red wine, or coffee, are unable to penetrate the coating on fabrics.  This is because each filament of every fibre is protected with a Nano scale layer of glass.  Most significantly, almost all treated surfaces can be cleaned with water alone. 

Solvents and cleaners are, generally, no longer required.  This means that, in most instances, environmentally damaging cleaning chemicals are not needed.

When cleaning existing surfaces we recommend that SiO2 Pre-Clean be used – refer to package directions. On heavily soiled surfaces, clean the surface thoroughly by utilizing traditional cleaning agents and follow with SiO2 Pre-Clean. Once it is established the surface is free of any contaminants, then apply the appropriate SiO2 product using the package directions or Tech sheet.

What happens when SiO2 Liquid Glass is applied?

Our coatings are imperceptible but changes will soon occur to the treated surface. Drops of water will roll around like a ball bearing on fabric. Stains will not permeate stone, even if left for long periods of time. Stainless steel will become fingerprint resistant and keep its shiny appearance – even in public . What surfaces can SiO2 Liquid Glass be applied to?

We have SiO2 products for glass and ceramic, stone, plastic, fabrics, wood, leather and suede, metals, graffiti, specific anti-bacterial and anti fouling products, and many others. Our clients are discovering new uses for our products everyday. SiO2 Liquid Glass products are specifically designed for their labeled surface. For example, SiO2 Textile Protect will not adhere properly to glass.How soon after applying SiO2 Ultra Thin Coating’s can I use the surface? Light use may resume soon after application, about 5 minutes after the product dries.Water based applications need approximately 24 hours to fully cure. Ethanol based products need 12 hours to become fully established for regular use.

Can SiO2 Liquid Glass be used outdoors?

Yes. Our products will withstand extreme temperature fluctuations and are flexible up to 200% but please refer to our Tech sheets for specifics. Is SiO2 Liquid Glass safe to handle? Yes. Liquid Glass Technology has been subjected to dermatological and mucosa testing – it is very safe to the skin. However, as a precautionary measure we recommend wearing gloves whenever you use our products as the ethanol in some of our products may dry out the skin.

How does SiO2 Liquid Glass fight bacteria and microbes?

Once applied, our technology becomes a durable coating that fights bacteria through ionic exchange. This means that the surface will not support bacterial growth. We also provide anti-bacterial products with the same attributes as our regular treatments but will eliminate MRSA, e-coli, and salmonella bacteria, among others, within minutes. Our products fight bacteria for the life of the treatment, unlike older technologies that use toxic additives that are short-lived and expensive. In most instances, maximum surface sanitation can be maintained by washing with water only. Do you offer anti graffiti products?

Yes. We have permanent and semi permanent formulations that will allow easy cleaning of graffiti. Are all SiO2 Liquid Glass products considered related to nanotechnology?

No. All but a few of our Liquid Glass products fall outside what is considered nanotechnology. In technical terms nanotechnology is defined under “ultra thin layers” as a coating that measures less than a 100 nanometers thick. Because most of our cured product layers are thicker than this, they are not, by  this measure, nanotechnology.

How does SiO2 Ultra Thin Layer’s benefit the environment?

In most instances, treated surfaces need only be cleaned with water. Treated surfaces are cleaner using water than cleaning duplicate surfaces with bleach or other such solutions. This eliminates the need for POPs (persistent organic pollutants) found in detergents and conventional cleaners that are flushed into water tables or sent to landfill sites. Because SiO2 Liquid Glass is inert, it will not harm the environment in any way. These are some of the biggest reasons that this technology wins environmental awards year after year.

Will using SiO2 Liquid Glass save me money?

Is SiO2 Liquid Glass damaged by strong acids or alkaline?

No. Another unique attribute of this product is that it can withstand ph values of between .5-12.5 ph. This is one of the many reasons Si02 Liquid Glass is used by major tile companies as a sealant for natural stone and ceramic tile. Many traditional stone sealants will allow staining if spills are not immediately removed but our products protect and extend the life of tile surfaces by prohibiting stains and the penetration of unwanted substances.
